My Grandma Is A Pilot
by Cheryl Young

Picture

History comes alive through stories. Half of the word History is story. Stories take you to other times and places, other ways of living and being.

As co-author of Love at First Flight with Elizabeth Strohfus, and as an educator Cheryl Young has looked for ways to make history fascinating and fun for children. History need not be something that you enjoy when you are older. You can start today documenting, (saving) pictures, newspaper articles, your stories, video and audio clips, to create your own history as well as those close to you.

Cheryl wrote this book to acknowledge children's gifts of art and story, to look at the changing nature of heroes in our lives and the relationships between grandparents and grandchildren.

Andy Fiolka was 5 years old when he met Cheryl at the wedding of his grandfather Martin to Elizabeth Strohfus.  Elizabeth, who was 70 years old at the time, became his new grandmother. Andy discovered that she flew the airplanes he drew.

When Cheryl first saw his drawings she realized that they had a unique opportunity to share this unusual story with children.

Cheryl waited for 5 years for Andy before they did this book together. When he was 10 years old, Cheryl asked him to illustrate the book.  Andy experienced this story and he was the right person to do these illustrations.

He created 24 original illustrations.

Together, they have created this true story which is a terrific inter-generational picture book!

Without three generations, this book would not have been possible.
